Louisiana rarely leads the pack in education — except when it comes to reading.

It’s one of just three states where students’ reading scores have rebounded to pre-pandemic levels, and its fourth graders led the country in reading growth on a 2022 national test. The gains followed sweeping literacy changes pursued by Louisiana’s Legislature and education department, including new teacher training, literacy coaches and dyslexia screenings.
